Year by year
- Telling a 2005 996 from a 2005 997 by VIN
- Both generations were sold as 2005 models. Read VIN position 12: a 6 means 996 and a 7 means 997. Porsche codes the model type in positions 7, 8 and 12, so a 2005 997 reads 9, 9 and 7. Do not rely on positions 4 and 5, because the same letters were used on both generations.
- 997.1 year by year
- 2005: Carrera and Carrera S coupes, with the Cabriolet following in spring 2005. 2006: Carrera 4 and 4S arrive, and the X51 Powerkit becomes available on S models. 2007: Targa 4 and 4S arrive (plus the Turbo and GT3). 2008: the last 997.1 Carreras.
- 997.1 engines: 3.6 (325 hp) and 3.8 (355 hp)
- Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa 4 use a 3.6-liter flat-six with 325 hp and 273 lb-ft. Carrera S, 4S and Targa 4S use a 3.8-liter with 355 hp and 295 lb-ft. Both are port-injected with an integrated dry sump and a 7,300 rpm redline. The optional X51 Powerkit raised the 3.8 to 381 PS (376 hp).
- Key options: PASM, Sport Chrono, X51, sport suspension and LSD
- PASM adaptive dampers were standard on S models and optional on base cars. Sport Chrono adds a Sport Plus mode, a dash timer and, with PDK, launch control. The 997.1 sport suspension package included a mechanical limited-slip differential but could not be combined with PASM. Most road cars left the factory with an open differential. - Special editions
- Club Coupe (2005, PCA 50th anniversary, 50 cars), Sport Classic (2010, 250 cars, 408 hp), Speedster (2011, 356 cars, PDK only) and the Black Edition 3.6 Carrera (2011). The rare ones trade far above normal Carreras.
Show all 12 changes
- Gearboxes: six-speed manual, five-speed Tiptronic (2005-2008), seven-speed PDK (2009-2012)
- Every Carrera was offered with a six-speed manual. The 997.1 automatic is a five-speed Tiptronic S built by Mercedes-Benz. For 2009 it was replaced by Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch, which adds about 66 lb (30 kg).
- Telling a 997.1 from a 997.2 by VIN
- For Carreras, the model year (VIN position 10) decides it: 5 to 8 (2005-2008) is a 997.1, and 9, A, B or C (2009-2012) is a 997.2. From MY2010 the VIN's seventh character changes from 9 to A. Source: static.nhtsa.gov, porscheclubgb.com, vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov.
- Weight and dimensions
- A Carrera coupe weighs about 3,120 lb (1,415 kg) and a Carrera S about 3,142 lb (1,425 kg). Carrera 4 models add about 120 lb. Cabriolets add about 187 lb (85 kg). The car is about 175 to 177 in long on a 92.5 to 92.9 in wheelbase. Source: en.wikipedia.org, pcaclubracing.org.
- 997 overview: two generations, one body
- The 997 replaced the 996 for the 2005 model year and was sold through 2012. The 997.1 (2005-2008) uses port-injected 3.6 and 3.8 engines. The 997.2 (2009-2012) brought direct-injection engines, the PDK gearbox and LED lighting. The 997 returned to oval headlights after the 996's combined units.
- Turbo, GT2 and GT3: different engines, not covered
- The 997 Turbo, GT2, GT3 and their RS versions use the Mezger engine family (the later 997.2 Turbo used a direct-injection 3.8). They are separate engine families from the Carrera and are not covered here. Source: porscheclubgb.com, fcpeuro.com, renndriver.com.
- 997.2 year by year
- 2009: direct-injection engines, PDK replaces Tiptronic, LED daytime lights and taillights, and a touchscreen PCM 3.0. 2011: the 408 hp Carrera GTS arrives, followed by the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 GTS. 2012: the 991 replaces the Carrera and Carrera S, while 997 GTS, Carrera 4 and Targa models finish the run. Source: porscheclubgb.com, api.nhtsa.gov, stuttcars.com.
- Carrera GTS: the wide-body, rear-drive 997.2 with 408 hp
- The GTS uses the 44 mm wider Carrera 4 body with rear-wheel drive and a 408 hp 3.8. It came with center-lock 19-inch RS Spyder wheels (305/30 R19 rears), a sport exhaust and Alcantara trim. A manual was standard and PDK optional. An all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 GTS followed in 2011. Source: newswire.ca, porscheclubgb.com.
Recalls
- Recall 20E091: Ohlins front struts (aftermarket)
