NA Miata: what breaks on track (free sample)

This is the “What breaks on track” section of the MettaCar NA Miata report, exactly as it appears in the paid version. Every row is backed by the sources listed below.

Failure Mechanism Who’s at risk Prevention Source
Oil starvation Oil sloshes away from the pickup in long high-g corners. Brief pressure loss leads to bearing wear or “catastrophic failure” Above about 1.5 g (slicks, high-grip setups) JPM baffle (not Spec Miata legal) Mazda Motorsports
Wheel / hub failure NA/NB hubs fail “with lighter loads”. On Flyin’ Miata’s heavily modified Targa Miata, a used upgraded rear hub failed and the wheel came off. The owner now treats wheel bearings “like consumables” Track use with sticky tires Blueprinted or Mazda Motorsports HD hubs, bought new. Watch for rumble, wobble, and rocking play Flyin’ Miata, Targa Miata diary
Overheating The thermostat sits at the front of the head, so cylinder 4 runs hot. The plastic radiator and overflow tank are now 30+ years old Hot climates, turbo cars Fresh radiator, coolant reroute, aluminum overflow tank Flyin’ Miata
Diff failure The 1.6 cars use a smaller 6-inch diff. The diff case ear can crack on hard launches Power and sticky tires 7-inch diff swap, reinforced housing miataturbo wiki, Grassroots Motorsports forum
Pads gone in one day One owner’s 1.6 car ran a BMW-club school with two drivers plus an instructor on stock pads. By the end of a session the fronts were metal-on-metal. The other Miatas there had 1.8 brakes or 1.6 cars converted to them 1.6 cars (smaller brakes) on stock pads Track pads; check pads after every session; consider 1.8-size brakes Miata.net, MX-5 Owners Club forum
Oil level drops under hard use The same owner topped up at the start of a track day. Days later at an autocross the engine tapped, the dipstick was dry, and a rod bearing was suspected Any older engine driven hard Check the dipstick between sessions, not just in the morning Miata.net
Brake fade Stock pads and old fluid overheat First-time HPDE drivers on a street setup High-temperature fluid and track pads Grassroots Motorsports forum, Flyin’ Miata
Lifters A 1993 car raced for a season (autocross and HPDE) ended up with 3 collapsed lifters and no compression in one cylinder Hard-used older engines Listen for lifter tick. Check the oil level between sessions Grassroots Motorsports, Grassroots Motorsports forum, Miata.net
